Pensionado residency: can your pension qualify?

Start with the pension, not your age

Pensionado is a temporary-residence route built around a qualifying pension. Costa Rican immigration practitioner guidance describes a minimum of US$1,000 per month, payable for life. U.S. Social Security retirement benefits and some government or employer pensions can meet that description. Ask for confirmation of your specific income source before ordering documents.

An IRA worth $500,000 does not prove that a pension pays for life. If you fund retirement through withdrawals, rentals or investments, compare the rentista route rather than assuming the account balance settles the question.

Build a file around the evidence

Start by asking the pension administrator what official evidence it can issue showing the amount, beneficiary and duration of payments. Send a sample to the person preparing your residency application before paying for authentication. Dependents need their own identity and relationship records; do not assume your pension letter replaces those.

• Compare every name against the passport, including middle names and previous surnames.
• Make a list of birth, marriage and criminal-record documents required for your family.
• Confirm which records need an apostille and an official Spanish translation.
• Keep a separate allowance for government charges, translations and professional help.

The income threshold is not a living budget

Qualifying for residency and paying for everyday life are separate calculations. Work out housing, transport, health coverage and trips to the United States before deciding whether your monthly pension is sufficient. Use the regional cost guide to start a budget with actual housing comparisons.

Ask how CCSS enrollment, monthly contributions, renewal and any work restrictions apply to the status you expect to receive. Do not book an irreversible move around a promised approval date or assume a residency application gives permission for local employment.
