Keeping a U.S. address while living in Costa Rica

Separate reliable mail handling, bank records and tax domicile so your arrangements stay consistent.

List the jobs your address needs to do

Make an inventory of the organizations that send you important mail: banks, insurers, retirement providers, tax agencies and professional bodies. For each, record whether you need physical forwarding, scanned mail, secure storage or simply an electronic statement.

Then ask what the organization means by address. A mailing field may differ from the field asking where you live. A service that receives envelopes does not automatically satisfy a residential-address or identification requirement.

Talk to banks before departure

Ask whether your bank and brokerage serve customers residing in Costa Rica, which products remain available, and how to provide your actual foreign residence alongside any accepted mailing address. Get guidance through the institution’s own support channels. Do not rely on a provider’s claim that an address is accepted everywhere.

Test account recovery and two-factor authentication. If your only recovery route is a U.S. phone number you will cancel, solve that problem while you can still visit a branch. Record where replacement cards can be delivered.

Compare the practical service terms

  • How quickly is incoming mail logged and scanned?
  • What is included, and what costs extra?
  • Which carriers and destinations are supported for forwarding?
  • How are originals, sensitive documents and discarded mail handled?
  • What happens if the service changes location or closes?

Compare a trusted family arrangement, professional mail forwarding and electronic delivery against the jobs you need done. Confirm each institution’s permitted address uses directly. No provider can guarantee acceptance by every bank or establish tax domicile for you merely by receiving mail.

One option to evaluate is Your Tax Base’s U.S. address and Florida domicile services for Americans living abroad. Compare the provider’s permitted address uses, mail-handling terms and fees with your own needs, and confirm acceptance directly with each institution.

Keep domicile as its own project

For state tax, what matters is the applicable law and your actual circumstances. New York’s domicile definition illustrates why a permanent home and intention matter. A new address on a statement is only one record, not a complete departure plan.

Use the state-tax exit guide to organize that separate review. Your mail arrangement should support your move, while your legal and financial records accurately describe it.
