Moving money to Costa Rica: compare the amount received

A practical way to compare a bank wire and a transfer service without being distracted by a zero-fee headline.

Ask for the full quote

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that covered remittance disclosures include the exchange rate, fees and expected amount received. A low upfront fee can coexist with an unfavorable exchange rate. A bank wire may also involve intermediary or receiving-bank charges.

Ask both providers to quote the same transaction at roughly the same time: the same dollars leaving your account, the same recipient currency and the same receiving method. Confirm whether the recipient gets dollars or colones and who performs any conversion.

Use a simple comparison

Suppose two illustrative quotes each cost US$2,000 in total. One delivers ₡970,000 and the other ₡985,000. The second delivers ₡15,000 more. These are invented comparison numbers, not live offers; the point is to compare the outcome after all known charges.

If your rent is payable in dollars, a dollar-to-dollar transfer may be the relevant comparison. Converting dollars into colones and back into dollars can introduce a second exchange spread. Match the transfer to the bill you need to pay.

Handle the first transfer deliberately

  • Get instructions directly from the receiving bank or verified recipient.
  • Check the account name, account number or IBAN, currency and purpose.
  • Confirm limits and source-of-funds evidence before a large transfer.
  • Use a small test when appropriate, allowing for its separate fee.
  • Keep the confirmation, reference number and amount credited.

For property purchases, confirm escrow and wire instructions through a previously verified phone number. An email announcing new bank details should trigger a verification call, not an immediate transfer.

Leave room for delays

Schedule recurring living-expense transfers ahead of rent and insurance deadlines. Weekends, compliance reviews and bank processing can interrupt a promised estimate. Keep an accessible reserve and understand the provider’s error-resolution and cancellation process. Recompare costs periodically because a first-transfer promotion is not necessarily the ongoing price.
