Pacific coast living: look beyond the beach view

Start with three different searches

The tourism board’s regional descriptions distinguish Guanacaste’s dry-forest landscapes, the Central Pacific and the lush Southern Pacific. Those differences are a reason to research separately instead of treating every beach town as interchangeable.

You might investigate Tamarindo or Playas del Coco in Guanacaste, Jacó or the Quepos area on the Central Pacific, and Dominical or Uvita farther south. This is a geographic shortlist, not a ranking of safety, affordability or suitability.

Ask what the beach location costs

Compare housing a realistic distance from the water with housing that offers the view you want. Ask for recent electricity bills, especially when the home relies on air conditioning. Include transport, road access, parking and the frequency of trips for specialist appointments.

The Tamarindo figures in our cost guide are a small-sample reference point. They should not be projected onto another town or a beachfront house.

Inspect access and services at the property

• Visit the access road in the conditions you expect to use it.
• Ask about water supply, storage and responsibility for maintenance.
• Confirm installed internet service and a usable backup.
• Check the travel route to a clinic and hospital.
• Understand the property’s title or concession status before buying.

If the home is remote, evaluate how deliveries, repairs and emergency access would work. A beautiful setting still needs a workable support system.

Make the trial stay representative

Book enough time to live your routine rather than scheduling a string of excursions. Ask long-term neighbors about changes across seasons, and return at another time of year if you are considering a purchase. A rental gives you room to change your mind as you learn what coastal living means for your household.
