Your U.S. driving license in Costa Rica: what to check

Start with the status you actually hold

Before driving, check the current rule for use of your foreign license under your admission or immigration category. Carry the required identity and entry evidence and ensure the license itself is valid. A pending residency application should not be treated as an automatic extension of every driving privilege.

If renting, confirm the company’s age, card, insurance and documentation conditions. Those commercial terms can be more restrictive than a general legal rule.

Understand homologation

Homologation is the process for obtaining a Costa Rican license based on an eligible foreign license. The MOPT information sheet says the procedure is personal and in person, and that there is no minimum period of stay to request it. That makes old advice about an automatic waiting period unreliable.

Use MOPT’s current eligibility and document instructions for your situation. Ask about acceptable immigration identification, a medical assessment, translations or certifications and the category of license being recognized. The general information sheet is not a complete personal checklist.

Prepare for the appointment

• Check that your foreign license and identification will still be valid.
• Confirm the exact service and office you are booking.
• Bring required originals, copies and any supporting certificates.
• Verify payment instructions through the official channel.
• Ask which step follows recognition before assuming the card is ready.

Do not pay an unverified intermediary just to obtain an appointment. MOPT’s information sheet states that booking the appointment is free.

Make the transport choice fit your home

Before choosing a remote rental, work out how you will travel if you cannot drive for a period. Test shopping and clinic access. Include insurance, parking, maintenance and the actual road conditions in a car budget. Keeping a valid U.S. license also requires following the issuing state’s rules and accurately maintaining your records.
