Get to know the regional context

The official Caribbean guide highlights the region’s Afro-Caribbean culture, natural reserves and coastline. That context deserves more attention than treating the area as a cheaper substitute for a Pacific beach town.

Start with Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and nearby communities as places to investigate. Meet people, use local businesses and learn how your daily routine would fit. A destination that works for a weekend may ask different things of a full-time resident.

Make access part of the decision

Map the journey from a prospective home to the services your household uses. Ask about the nearest suitable clinic, pharmacy, school and grocery options. If you need regular specialist care or frequent flights, test those longer trips before signing a lease.

Inspect water management, ventilation and the condition of furniture and storage. Ask how the owner handles leaks, humidity and maintenance, and who responds if something fails while you are working.

Do not invent a regional budget

We have not verified a sufficiently comparable local price sample to publish an average monthly Caribbean budget. Get current long-term rental quotes for the exact communities you are considering. Add transport and health costs using your own expected journeys.

Test your working and social life

• Run video calls from the actual room and connection you will use.
• Confirm a backup for power and internet.
• Walk the neighborhood during the hours you expect to be out.
• Look for recurring activities and opportunities to learn Spanish.
• Spend time there doing normal errands, not only visiting attractions.

A successful move involves becoming part of a place. Give yourself time to learn its routines before making a permanent commitment.
